Jonie Fu AIA NCARB

Founding Partner

Jonie Fu has provided urban planning and design leadership for award-winning projects over the last twenty-five years. She is a Founding Partner of Fu Wilmers Design | Architecture + Urbanism (fwd | A+U). Believing that every city is unique and every place distinctive, Ms. Fu is interested in understanding the physical design issues of a place and its context and above all the relationship between the built and natural environments.  The master plans and the environment she has created are transformational, memorable and inspiring.  Her experience in urban design includes strategic planning, framework plans, master plans, development plans, and institution districts and communities, with private sector clients to imagine new neighborhoods and waterfronts, and with higher education institutions to update and redefine new environments for learning.  She is particularly interested in American cities and towns with the need to address financial challenges, downtown viability, neighborhood feasibility, and long-term planning strategies.

Prior to founding her own firm, Ms. Fu was as a Principal and Director of Urban Design at AECOM, a global provider of professional and technical services, where she developed AECOM’s urban design studio to provide clients with comprehensive design services for campus planning, urban design, transit oriented master plans and urban waterfronts. Prior to AECOM, Jonie Fu worked for renowned architectural firms in New York City.  Within these large firms, she honed her skills in delivering solutions that create, enhance, and sustain the worlds’ built, natural and social environments. She now brings her global experience, local knowledge, innovation, and technical excellence to focus on urban design.

Jonie was awarded a Tommy Award for her outstanding achievement by the USC Alumni Club of New York in 2011. She serves on the Alumni Board at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and was President Emerita from 2014 to 2016.
